Artist's Description

Wanna Be reveals the subdued passionate freedom of womanhood. She wants to be what society demands of her. She is a natural, colorful, bejeweled expression of power, control, and dominion over her earthly environment (seen in the colors of her torso.) Her brightly colored, flowing hair depicts the desire for freedom of thought. The colors and shades of her facial features represent the journey of The Black Woman Sister of the Nubian Diaspora. She bares and boasts fertile breasts that nurture and feed humanity. Her mask covers and reveals evidence of the African-American experience. Yet, this Nubian archetype makes no excuses for herself, her experience, or her birthright as daughter of Ancient Kemet. She sees each aspect of herself as that which keeps universal order.

About Cleaster Cotton

Cleaster Cotton

CLEASTER COTTON Cleaster Cotton is an African American/Native American multimedia artist. Born into a large, close-knit family, she was lovingly raised by southern parents in Brooklyn, New York. Cleaster began traveling nationally and internationally at a young age - researching cultures, the arts, education, cuisine and nature. Her alma maters are Fordham University and San Diego City College. Cleaster’s scientific and natural approach to her creative process is influenced by the methodology of her ancestors, elders and ancients. At age five, she fell in love with her mother’s artistic abilities... and right then and there she knew she was an artist! Her first childhood creations were made of mud, twigs, paper and plant pigment....
