Artist's Description

This is a photograph of a generator with a chain and various pipes overhead.

These fine art photographs of industrial architecture were taken in 2006 of the Sears Roebuck & Company building, in midtown, Atlanta Georgia s Old Fourth Ward, on Ponce de Leon Avenue. The Sears building is the largest brick structure in the southeastern U.S. It was originally constructed in 1926 by Richard Warren Sears, Alvah Curtis Roebuck & Company as a retail store, regional warehouse and catalog distribution center. Sears closed the retail store in 1979 and ended warehouse operations in the mid 1980 s. Freight lines and trolley lines came right up to the building, near the loading decks. The Atlanta Crackers stadium, the amusement park and other cultural venues were on site.

The City of Atlanta purchased the property in 1991 where they set up administrative offices (including the Bureau of Cultural Affairs and the Atlanta Fire Department) in a portion of the building until 2010....

About Cleaster Cotton

Cleaster Cotton

CLEASTER COTTON Cleaster Cotton is an African American/Native American multimedia artist. Born into a large, close-knit family, she was lovingly raised by southern parents in Brooklyn, New York. Cleaster began traveling nationally and internationally at a young age - researching cultures, the arts, education, cuisine and nature. Her alma maters are Fordham University and San Diego City College. Cleaster’s scientific and natural approach to her creative process is influenced by the methodology of her ancestors, elders and ancients. At age five, she fell in love with her mother’s artistic abilities... and right then and there she knew she was an artist! Her first childhood creations were made of mud, twigs, paper and plant pigment....
