About the Art:
The Advisor is a contemporary, mixed media, acrylic, figurative painting on wood. I created this piece in 2011.
The Advisor is a large portrait. The narrative is within the background and the subject�s face that is comprised of a big bold, in-your-face expression. Sand and paint build up the under painting� giving it tooth. Burlap and layers of paint build up the background and give both eyes depth, texture, and detail. There are layers of organic shapes and several colors in this painting. Some of the colors include metallic gold, bronze, and silver.
Symbolism:
Sometimes, in my paintings, you will notice a figure with a red, white, and blue eye. That symbolizes the historic association of Nubians (Africans) to America. In this painting, the figure has one red, white, and blue eye and one camouflage-colored eye. The camouflage colors symbolize an association with the military.

CLEASTER COTTON Cleaster Cotton is an African American/Native American multimedia artist. Born into a large, close-knit family, she was lovingly raised by southern parents in Brooklyn, New York. Cleaster began traveling nationally and internationally at a young age - researching cultures, the arts, education, cuisine and nature. Her alma maters are Fordham University and San Diego City College. Cleaster’s scientific and natural approach to her creative process is influenced by the methodology of her ancestors, elders and ancients. At age five, she fell in love with her mother’s artistic abilities... and right then and there she knew she was an artist! Her first childhood creations were made of mud, twigs, paper and plant pigment....
