Description
About the Art:
The Advisor is a contemporary, mixed media, acrylic, figurative painting on wood. I created this piece in 2011.
The Advisor is a large portrait. The narrative is within the background and the subjects face that is comprised of a big bold, in-your-face expression. Sand and paint build up the under painting giving it tooth. Burlap and layers of paint build up the background and give both eyes depth, texture, and detail. There are layers of organic shapes and several colors in this painting. Some of the colors include metallic gold, bronze, and silver.
Symbolism:
Sometimes, in my paintings, you will notice a figure with a red, white, and blue eye. That symbolizes the historic association of Nubians (Africans) to America. In this painting, the figure has one red, white, and blue eye and one camouflage-colored eye. The camouflage colors symbolize an association with the military.
In America, the Advisor in Western Nubia (Africa) the Griot:
A griot in Western Nubia (Africa) is an oral historian, musician, and trusted advisor to the king. The griot recites the history of the kingdom to be passed down from generation to generation. In these instances, instead of written documents, history was memorized and recited or sung to ensure the continuity of the heritage and culture. Details of significant events such as births, deaths, marriages, hunts, and wars were memorized by the griot.
