Artist's Description
I took this contrast photo from the lobby, while inside the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia, USA in 2006. I looked up and marveled at the architectural design. What a fabulous composition of line and shape! The positive-negative shape relationship was amazing. I held my camera up over my head and began the photo shoot. With this subject matter and my excitement, I had an absolute ball!
About the Building
The Atlanta Marriott Marquis is a 52-story building, designed by Atlanta architect, John C. Portman, Jr. One of the defining features of the Marriott Marquis is its large atrium. It was the largest in the world upon its completion in 1985, at 470 feet high. The record was later broken by the Burj Al-Arab in Dubai. The atrium spans the entire height of the building and consists of two vertical chambers divided by elevator shafts and bridges.
About Cleaster Cotton
CLEASTER COTTON Cleaster Cotton is an African American/Native American multimedia artist. Born into a large, close-knit family, she was lovingly raised by southern parents in Brooklyn, New York. Cleaster began traveling nationally and internationally at a young age - researching cultures, the arts, education, cuisine and nature. Her alma maters are Fordham University and San Diego City College. Cleaster’s scientific and natural approach to her creative process is influenced by the methodology of her ancestors, elders and ancients. At age five, she fell in love with her mother’s artistic abilities... and right then and there she knew she was an artist! Her first childhood creations were made of mud, twigs, paper and plant pigment....
