Description
I took this photograph from the bus and was able to capture this Harlem landmark bar and some of Harlem's day-to-day activities ~ such as the man in window, behind fire escape, people standing on the sidewalk, talking, and a blue, parked vehicle with the name of the bar reflected in its shiny top.
Lenox Lounge is a Harlem, New York City landmark bar. It is located at 288 Malcolm X Boulevard (Lenox Avenue,) between 124th and 125th streets. The bar was founded in 1939 and served as venue for performances by many great jazz artists, including Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. Harlem Renaissance writers James Baldwin and Langston Hughes were both patrons as was Malcolm X.
The Lenox Lounge featured as the hang-out of Detective John Shaft in the 2000 remake of the film Shaft. Both the exterior facade and interior of Lenox Lounge were featured in the film American Gangster. In one scene Denzel Washington's character, Frank Lucas, meets with Nicky Barnes, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., in the renowned Zebra Room at the Lenox Lounge. The Zebra Room also was used for a key scene in the Mad Men pilot, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.

Comment emailed to me from collectors in New York: May I say, your work "Lenox Lounge" that we purchased made Harlem come alive with its historical significance and its life! Your work is who you are and now we enjoy having your essence with us forever. You're work is in our bedroom and both Herb and I wake up and go to sleep to it every single day. What a wonderful feeling and thank you so for your talent and thank you for you! Love, B&H
