Description

Five Flowers Five Vessels is a contemporary primitive, mixed media, still life painting. It is textural, composed of burlap fibers, cotton fabric, and acrylic paint on tarpaper, and interacts with natural and artificial light and with the perspective of the viewer.

The main components of this composition are five stemmed flowers, in the foreground that are, simultaneously, growing out of the rich soil and coming out of the vessels that are earthed in the soil. The horizon line represented by the topsoil is the dividing line between that which is seen and unseen, the past and present, the present and future. The soil itself represents the unknown, that which is hidden from view - the abundant mystery. The movement of the background environment depicts that which exists near and far� and in plain sight.

I created this during my Artist in Residency at The Pink Dog Creative (winter of 2013-14.)
